This is a seismic shift. The beginning of the beginning… “Americans deserve an economy that allows each person to succeed through hard work and creativity and to lead a life of meaning and dignity.” That’s how the new “Statement on the Purpose of a Corporation” by the influential American Business Roundtable (BRT) begins. This was published today and has so far hit both Fortune and the NYT (among other publications).

This is a seismic shift from the statement issued by the BRT two decades ago that stated, “The paramount duty of management and of boards of directors is to the corporation’s stockholders.” The whole statement is only 300 words long (and the word shareholder does not appear until 3/4 of the way through it), but I believe this will have profound effects. This brings what many of us have hoped for, talked about and worked towards out of the fringe and into the mainstream.

It’s the beginning of the beginning.

Now the hard (but joyous) work really begins.

I’d love to hear your thoughts!
