According to the Australian HR Institute (AHRI), 40% of Australian employers are no longer requiring their people to come into the office at all.

The irony is that they will probably see more people back in the office than they did if/when they had previously required people to spend a certain number of days on site.

Two basic needs are at play here. The need for agency, control, and choice – and the need to connect.

When you require people to do anything today, the need for the first takes over because we’ve been deprived of so much control and choice over the last few years. Our people will resist many directives today as a result.

But when you give them the ability to decide, the need for the second – to connect – takes over. People will come willingly into the office.

And leaders will be left shaking their heads.
